Family of Jacob WHITMAN (8) & Anna/Annie SPINNEY

52. Spinney WHITMAN. Born in 1798. Spinney died in Canso, Nova Scotia on 11 Dec 1878, he was 80.

Spinney Whitman first came to Canso as a young man, encouraged by his uncle Abraham, who assisted Spinney in his business as a tanner and shoemaker. However, hides were difficult to come by and he gave up the business. His first wife Caroline died of tuberculosis after four years of marriage at age 20. Spinney was reportedly "a most upright man and honest", and was highly respected in the community. A hill in Canso is named "Spinney's Hill" in his memory.

Spinney first married Caroline Nelson HARRIS, daughter of John HARRIS & Abigail SPURR. Born on 20 Apr 1800.

Died of Tuberculosis at age 20. Her husband Spinney Whitman remarried Martha Hart.

They had the following children:

ii. Unnamed.

Died shortly after his mother, in infancy.


In 1829 when Spinney was 31, he second married Martha HART, daughter of Tyrus HART (13 Jan 1773-30 Jul 1828) & Martha INGRAHAM/INGRAM (-25 May 1826), in Canso, Nova Scotia. Martha died in 1878 in Amherst, NS.

They had the following children:
i. Caroline. Born in 1835. Caroline died in 1853, she was 18.

53. Joanna WHITMAN. Born in 1808.

In 1827 when Joanna was 19, she married William or John BENT / BEST[12],[2].[2]

They had the following children:
i. William Henry[2]. Born in 1828. William Henry died in 1849, he was 21.

ii. Eliza[2]. Born in 1830.

Eliza married Daniel COLLINS[2].


54. Mercy WHITMAN. Born in Annapolis, NS. Mercy died abt 1847 in Round Hill, NS.

On 5 Dec 1810 Mercy married Edward BARTEAUX, son of William BERTEAUX/BARTEAUX & Ann SPURR. Born in 1787.

They had the following children:
i. Freeman. Born on 27 Aug 1811.

Freeman married Lucy Ann RICE[12],[3], daughter of Levi RICE & Margaret ROBINSON.

ii. Edward James. Born on 3 Jul 1813.

Edward James married Margaret Ann TUPPER[12].

iii. Benjamin Spinney. Born in 1815.

Benjamin Spinney married Anne BAKER[3].

iv. Ann Whitman[12]. Born in 1818.

Ann Whitman married William POTTER.

v. Louisa[12],[3]. Born on 15 Apr 1820.

Louisa married Josiah Spurr POTTER[12],[3].

vi. Eliza Jane[2]. Born in 1822.

In 1806 David married Sarah STARRATT, daughter of John STARRATT & Hannah BANCROFT, in Annapolis, NS. Born in 1789.

56. Jacob WHITMAN Jr. Born on 11 Jun 1786. Jacob died in 1834, he was 47.

Jacob married Lydia TUPPER, daughter of Nathan TUPPER (1757-1832) & Lydia FREEMAN (1760-1834). Born in 1789 in Liverpool, NS. Lydia died in Liverpool, NS on 1 Nov 1855, she was 66.

They had the following children:

Jacob married Susan McGILL. Born in 1815.
