109. Clement St. Clair WHITMAN. Born in 1846 in Canso, Nova Scotia. Occupation: Shopkeeper for A.N. Whitman & Sons in Canso, NS.

In 1887 when Clement St. Clair was 41, he married Sarah Jane WORTH, daughter of Reuben WORTH (bef 1843-) & Jane GRAHAM (bef 1847-), in Canso, Nova Scotia.

They had the following children:
i. Aubrey Smith[19],[20]. Born on 20 Jun 1888 in Canso, Nova Scotia. Aubrey Smith died in Wilmington, Delaware on 19 Oct 1940, he was 52. Buried in Wilmington, Delaware. Occupation: Artist/Photographer. Education: College of Photography, McMinnville, Tennessee; University of Alabama.

Aubrey was known as a light-hearted practical joker, which is evidenced in some of his work done while he was a professional photographer in Truro Nova Scotia. HIs practical jokes would drive Marcia crazy with embarrassment in front of company, but he was well-loved among his family and friends. He would paint in color over the black and white photos he took, as color film was not yet available. He was one of the officers of the photography club in Wilmington for many years. HIs personal momentos include dozens of postcard type notices about club events which were mailed to members. He also left many dozens of photographs of the towns and country and working people of Nova Scotia, as well as a copy of the Canso News from 1912. His photo journals and notes were an inspiration to create this family tree. He died young of colon cancer, within weeks of being diagnosed. At the time, nothing could be done to save his life. He did not get to meet his grandchildren, or see his daughter Marcia get married. He left behind a treasure of photographs of "Jean" as a girl, documenting every change as she grew.

In 1916 when Aubrey Smith was 27, he married Marcia Allen HALL, daughter of William B. HALL & Mary Elizabeth LABOYTEAUX (25 Jun 1861-10 Jun 1938), in Pottsville, PA. Born on 9 Feb 1890 in Pottsville, PA. Marcia Allen died in Toms River, NJ in Nov 1972, she was 82. Buried in Toms River, NJ. Occupation: Housewife and Mother.

Marcia met Aubrey Whitman when he stopped in to her church one Sunday. Her father invited Aubrey home for Sunday dinner and they corresponded and became engaged. After a honeymoon travelling through Atlantic City, New York City, Boston, and New Brunswick, They arrived to live in Canso, NS, Aubrey's hometown. They later moved to Truro, where Aubrey set up a photography studio. Marcia was unable to stand the long cold Nova Scotian winters, so she and Aubrey moved back to the US and lived in Wilmington until his death in 1944. Later "Nana" (as her grandchildren called her) moved in with her daughter's family, helping to raise the children, and moved first to northern New Jersey, then in the early 1960's, to Toms River, NJ, where she spent her last years in the home of her daughter and family. She had several strokes during her last years.
Marcia didn't like the cold of Nova Scotia, and the couple moved back to PA and then to Wilmington, Delaware, where Aubrey set up a studio and was involved with the photography club there.
Aubrey died young in 1942, and Marcia lived until her death with her daughter "Jean" and son-in-law, Robert Donaldson; moving with them to northern NJ in 1955 and later to the Toms River area of southern-central NJ.
Marcia was raised in a horse and buggy society as a girl, and lived to see the development of automobiles, radio, television, and saw the moon landing on tv.

ii. Clara. Born on 26 Jun 1892 in Canso, Guysborough, NS.

On 13 Jul 1911 when Clara was 19, she married William Frederick GRATTO, son of Matthew GRATTO (2 Aug 1856-) & Esther A. HORTON (abt 1856-). Born on 21 Jun 1880 in PEI. William Frederick died on 23 Jun 1958, he was 78.
