Until his marriage he was devoted to farming, after that he was involved in general merchandising. In 1859 he was elected as a member of the Nova Scotia Assembly, representing Annapolis County for 12 years. In 1878 he was elected as a member of the Dominion Parliament but declined re-election. For over four years he was chief Railway Commissioner of Government Railways in Nova Scotia and acted with the Conservative Party.
