| Notes for Henry III, (Spouse 1) |
| Shrewd more than subtle, he ruled for 56 years, maturing into a gentle, pious man, a patron of the religious arts, and concerned for the image of the monarchy. Even so, he was unable to transfer that concern into effective political action which was essential to a successful medieval kingship. He found it was hard to gain or keep the trust of his barons, and like his father, came into a bitter conflict with them. He failed to regain the Plantagenet dominions, despite an immense financial investment toward that purpose. |
