| Notes for Edward I "Longshanks", (Spouse 1) |
| He delighted in tournaments and hunting. His nickname "Longshanks" came about because of his height. He organized the laws of Britain and this had a long- lasting effect. His laws were not just restatements of existing customs, but statutes in the modern sense. In 1285 one of these statutes limited church courts strictly to church matters. In 1297 he reaffirmed the Magna Carta. Not always fair and admirable, he forced the Jews out of Britain. The same year, all of Scotland rose up against him in revolt under the popular leader William Wallace, as in the movie "Braveheart". In 1307, at the age of 70, he led an army toward Scotland but died before he reached the border. His son, Edward II was a homosexual and weak as a ruler; more interested in fine clothes than ruling a country. |
