At thirteen his father gave him his time and he spent the next three years in lumbering and made one trip to the fishing banks. At 16 he began a four year apprenticeship as wheelwright; in 1870 he went to Boston, Mass. to perfect himself in his tradeand worked a year at South Amesbury, acting as Sunday school superintendant. He became impressed with the duty of preaching and he was determined to secure an education and devote himself to the ministry.
After a course at the Worcester Academy he entered Brown University, graduating in 1878 and from Newton Theological Seminary in 1881; the same spring he received the degree of A.M from Brown University. On june 22, 1881 he was ordained over the Baptist Church at Newton, Upper Falls, Mass. but in October of that year he was stricken with a severe attack of pneumonia that forced him to abandon his charge and seek a warmer climate. His church reluctantly granted his request and he went to Darlington, SC where he recovered his health and was able to take charge of the church at that place. In 1883 he accepted a call to the Brighton Ave. Baptist Church in Allston, Mass.
