| Spinney Whitman first came to Canso as a young man, encouraged by his uncle Abraham, who assisted Spinney in his business as a tanner and shoemaker. However, hides were difficult to come by and he gave up the business. His first wife Caroline died of tuberculosis after four years of marriage at age 20. Spinney was reportedly "a most upright man and honest", and was highly respected in the community. A hill in Canso is named "Spinney's Hill" in his memory. |
