Notes for Abraham WHITMAN |
Came to Canso to start a shipbuilding business; saw it was a better place to do a fishing business. There were five families in Canso when he arrived. He would go to Canso in the spring and go back to Chester in the winter months. Fearing the danger of the privateers of the time, he decided to move his family to Canso. He brought in a teacher for the children and settled there. His business built the town's economy and population to over 1600 individuals. He was the "Grand Sire" of the Whitman business in Canso. |
